TITLE: Vice President, Medical Affairs

The Vice President, Medical Affairs (VPMA) is responsible for assuring and continually improving the overall safety, quality and effective delivery of hospital-based medical care; creating an environment that endeavors to create a favorable working environment for physicians and associate medical staff; overseeing and managing all medical staff related governance issues; and for participating in the strategic development of hospital medical programs. The VPMA also provides the leadership team with the unique guidance afforded by his/her experience as a physician and advocates on behalf of medical staff, as appropriate. The VPMA shall serve as the primary liaison between the organization and the medical staff.


1. Quality and Patient Safety

a. Effectively serves as a resource for and expertly collaborates with medical staff chairpersons, directors and others to lead patient safety and quality improvement activities.

b. In collaboration with key stakeholders, designs and effectively coordinates a systematic approach to establish standards of performance and monitoring mechanism for all medical departments including quality initiatives, patient care review (peer review), physician performance (FPPE/OPPE), credentialing and privileging, utilization review, risk management, infection control, safety, and clinical outcomes.

c. Possesses expert knowledge and continually develops capabilities in the field of clinical quality improvement and patient safety.

d. Collaborates with the medical staff, medical staff leadership and others to improve patient engagement and patient experience outcomes throughout the hospital. Also collaborates with medical staff and medical staff leadership as well as administration to improve medical staff engagement and alignment.

e. Actively facilitates processes to ensure the appropriate utilization of clinical resources and assures medical staff utilization decisions are consistent with regulatory requirements.

f. In collaboration with medical staff leadership, continuously reviews and designs and updates practice guidelines and standards of care.

2. Medical Affairs

a. Serves as the primary liaison between administration, department chairpersons and the larger physician medical staff.

b. Develops a strong working relationship with all physicians and effectively manages the complex intricacies of the medical staff, while consistently facilitating decision-making that is consistent with our values and with ensuring the delivery of excellent clinical care.

c. Develops and implements robust and effective physician communication strategies.

d. Coordinates with the elected medical staff and other physician leaders, to ensure the ongoing adherence to, maintenance of and effectiveness of the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules and Regulations.

e. Effectively addresses physician issues including inappropriate behavior, failure to adhere to accepted standards of clinical practice, failure to come in when on-call, failure to complete charts on time, etc.

f. Ensures medical staff committees are effective.

g. Develops and mentors high potential medical staff members.

3. Management/Strategy

a .Participates in the development and implementation of new patient care programs and hospital/medical staff ventures.

b. Provides regular input into strategic planning and resource allocation activities of the hospital, as the senior medical member of management.

c. As they relate to the medical staff, ensures the hospital and related affiliated operations meet The Joint Commission, state and federal standards and guidelines.

d. Maintains and keeps medical staff related policies and procedures updated.

e. Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at seminars, workshops, conferences or in-services, professional affiliations or journals to stay abreast of current trends in field of expertise.

f. Assists departmental chairmen in overseeing all hospital based physician services.

g. Perform other duties as assigned by the President &/or CMO including, but not limited to, taking administrative call, chairing appropriate committees, preparing reports, and performing studies and conducting ad hoc analyses.


Education: An advanced medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) and license to practice medicine in New York are required.

Experience: Ten (10) years of experience as a practicing physician is required.

Leadership experience is required. Previous experience as a VPMA is preferred.
